‘Inspirational… Stunning… Amazing.’ These were just some of the reactions from hundreds of Jewish worshippers attending the first service at the new Menorah Synagogue on Altrincham Road in Sharston, home to Cheshire Reform Congregation.
Menorah Synagogue's new buildingContractors worked day and night to complete the state-of-the-art structure in time for Yom Kippur. Its high pitched roof features clear glass panels that let natural light flood into the central area where services are held, whilst white walls and halogen spotlights complete a truly modern place of worship.
Members drawn from South Manchester, Cheshire and beyond all helped to raise the funds for the building.
“This shows the increasing popularity of Menorah in Manchester, the North West and in the Movement for Reform Judaism,” said Chairman Robert Shields, noting that this is the first new Reform synagogue to be built in the UK for twenty years.
Menorah minister Rabbi Brian Fox is delighted with the new synagogue: “Our community is primarily about people, but our beautiful new building not only inspires our services but will also be a welcome home for cultural, social and inter-faith gatherings for the whole community,” he said.
Leonard Jacobs, a founder of Menorah 45 years ago, recalled the very first service at Northenden’s Friends Meeting House. “We have come a long way since those days and have grown in strength, commitment and service to the community. I bless all those who have helped to turn our dreams into a reality,” he said.
The formal dedication ceremony will take place on 29 November in the presence of Rabbi Tony Bayfield, Head of the national Reform movement, Israeli Ambassador, Ron Prosor, civic dignitaries and representatives from Manchester’s multi-faith community.
