Lord Hermer’s reported advice against UK strikes on Iran is a disgrace

The attorney general is living proof of how a dogmatic approach to ‘international law’ can be used to advance an ideological agenda

Because obviously. Was there every any doubt that the Attorney General, who has been dubbed an “arrogant, progressive fool” by his fellow Labourite Lord Glasman, would oppose British involvement in American strikes upon one of the worst regimes in the world?

In case you missed it, Lord Hermer of Alyth Gardens Synagogue – for it is he – has reportedly declared that it could be illegal for Britain to play “any role in [the Iran campaign] except for defending our allies”. Even that statement was a bit rich: Britain has conspicuously failed to defend Israel’s skies so far. Or does Israel no longer count as an ally?

Lord Hermer is living proof that a dogmatic adherence to the malleable mores of “international law” can provide a handy cover for advancing an ideological agenda, leading to some profoundly immoral positions.

Take the arrest warrant issued by international courts for Benjamin Netanyahu. There are strong arguments to suggest it was politically motivated; after all, no such warrant has been issued against the ayatollah and other leaders deserving of the ICC’s attention. Yet Hermer pledged to honour it, effectively banning the wartime prime minister of a supposed ally from our shores.
