I have only been at Limmud for one day and already it feels like I am part of an oversized and loving family. I am here to experience the joys of Limmud and inform readers of the wonderful goings on at Teen Limmud.
After finishing lunch with my dad, Leon, we parted ways as I headed for the introductory session on Teen Limmud. As I first entered the building dedicated to the teenagers of Limmud, I didn't feel worried or nervous about meeting new people - which is a first. Instead, I felt excited and looked forward to the beginning of new friendships as well as re-establishing old ones. I found my way to the correct room in which a few people were seated and I introduced myself, gaining more confidence as I realised how accepting and welcoming everybody was - madrachim and peers alike. As the room filled up, we sat in a circle and everyone had the chance to say their name, number of times they had been to Limmud (which ranged from 20 to 0), which animal they would like to be and what their favourite shaped face was (to which some members replied 'oblong' or 'round' and which others replied 'maybe with an eye over here' - pointing to her forehead- 'and another over here' - pointing to her chin).
After everybody had had their say, we were told about what the next few days were going to look like. There will be multiple sessions being ran especially for Teen Limmud, in which many of the most respected and well established speakers will be joining us. A few of the sessions lined up for tomorrow include; Gilad Shalit - At Any Price? - This is based on the issue of Israel releasing terrorists in exchange for a life (or dead body); Theft from a Thief - this is a discussion about why people steal, if it is the amount that matters or the principle, whilst considering modern situations and a story from the Talmud; Wham, Whack, Parsha Plays - people will be given a chance to act out this week's Parsha using quotes from the Torah; and more!
We were also told about being a volunticipant. This is means helping around the campus in any area that we find interesting (catering, reception etc.) or trying to raise money/awareness for certain causes. Ideas for a Flash Mob are being toyed with, however the list of things to do is endless; busking, dancing, posters, sculptures etc.
After being informed of this, we were then split into two groups, one of years 9 & 10 and the other of years 11 & 12, who were taken into a different room. We spent the majority of the afternoon playing games and getting to know each other. When the session was over, we all headed over to the Teen Lounge whilst we chatted, made friends and chilled out before dinner. I can honestly say that I have made some really amazing friends today.
Gabi.
