It is time Israel joins the international agreement on proliferation of nuclear weapons. Since Mordechai Vanunu revealed that indeed as the world suspected Israel has many warheads, the condition of ambiguity deliberately exploited by e.g. Shimon Peres who declared "Israel will not introduce nuclear arms into the middle east", should cease.
I propose that unilaterally Israel should surrender about 15% of its stockpile to the USA while negotiating to join the international treaty. This move would force Iran onto the back foot and would create an atmosphere conducive to all states in the region agreeing to remove the threat of nuclear weapons. Anyone with an ounce of logic must see that nuclear weapons only bring "MAD" mutually assured destruction, and could play no logical role in regional arms balance.
Unfortunately, the whole question of Israel's nuclear arms has become shrouded in an almost taboo atmosphere and no one has questioned either the logic or efficacy of retaining them.
