World Jewish Relief has launched an emergency appeal following the earthquake which struck Mexico yesterday.
More than 200 people have died but the toll is expected to rise as rescue workers continue searches among the rubble.
Donations will enable the charity to provide shelter, temporary accommodation and hygiene kits to victims.
Paul Anticoni, WJR chief executive, said: “As we head into Rosh Hashanah, sadly the world is in turmoil once again. Thousands of people have lost everything in Mexico.
“On the High Holy Days we recite the Unetaneh Tokef prayer which speaks – terrifyingly – about who will die by earthquake. Jewish tradition teaches us that while we can’t stop natural disasters, we can choose how we respond to them. Please help us support the people of Mexico.”
The quake hit the town of Raboso 76 miles south east of Mexico City.
The appeal will run separately from the charity’s New Year appeal for its work among Jewish communities in East Europe.
