Woody Allen film gets UK release date

His delayed movie stars Jewish actor Timothee Chalamet

Woody Allen’s latest film A Rainy Day In New York has finally got a UK release date, 18 months after it was first scheduled to debut. Mired in controversy for months, the film was recently acquired by Signature Entertainment, a UK distributor known for its multi-platform releases, and will be made available digitally from June 5..

Starring Call Me By Your Name and Little Women star Timothee Chalamet, A Rainy Day in New York tells the story of college sweethearts, Gatsby (Chalamet) and Ashleigh (Elle Fanning), whose plans for a romantic weekend in New York City are dashed by bad weather and a series of unexpected adventures. The film also stars singer turned actor Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Diego Luna and Liev Schreiber.

Funded by Amazon Prime Videos as part of a multi-picture deal with Allen, the film started shooting in 2017,  and was consequently shelved. Plans for three other movies were also cancelled due to the well-documented controversies surrounding the veteran filmmaker. As a result Allen filed a $68m (£52m) lawsuit against Amazon in February 2019, but the lawsuit was recently settled.
