Sir Terry Wogan was warmly recalled by one rabbi who worked with him. Maidenhead Synagogue's Rabbi Jonathan Romain regularly did the "Pause for Thought" religion slot on the broadcaster's daily Radio 2 show.
"All the good things said about him are true," said Rabbi Romain. "He was as affable and full of bonhomie off air as he was on it."
The Irish presenter liked to swap priest-and-rabbi jokes. "One I recall was about the man whose dog died and wanted it buried in consecrated ground," Rabbi Romain said.
"The rabbi said dogs didn't have souls and couldn't be in the cemetery, the Catholic priest turned him down too, but suggested he try the Protestants. When the man said, 'What a shame. Over the years, I've saved £20,000 to give him a good send-off', the priest replied, 'Ah, that's different, you didn't say he was a Catholic dog!'"
