Mamdani faced allegations of antisemitism during the campaign, but pledged to ‘never waver’ in combating Jew-hate

Anti-Israel democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani has emerged victorious in New York City's mayoral election overnight.
The 34-year-old Democrat defeated former state governor Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
He becomes the youngest man elected to the post since 1892 and the city's first Muslim mayor.
The race captured national attention, with US President Trump labelling Mamdani a "communist" and notable donors on both sides pouring millions into the race.
Mamdani was also subject to a slew of Islamophobic attacks, with prominent political commentators on the right dubbing him an "Islamist".
However, Jewish groups raised concerns during the campaign over his anti-Israel views and allegations of antisemitism against him.
This includes his refusal to condemn the phrase "globalise the Intifada", which many Jews consider to be antisemitic, and his pledge to order the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu if he visits the city.
Mamdani has also called the war in Gaza a "genocide" and said he would view policy decisions relating to trade and commerce through a "BDS lens", including a promise to close the city’s Technion, a branch of Haifa’s famed research university focusing on technological advancement.
More recently, he saw a public backlash after a video of him condemning the IDF’s provision of training to New York police officers in 2023 resurfaced, showing that he had claimed: “When the boot of the NYPD is on your neck, it’s been laced by the IDF.”
Reacting to his election, Israel’s representative at the UN, Danny Danon, said: “Mamdani’s inflammatory remarks will not deter us.
"The Jewish community in New York and across the United States deserves safety and respect. We will continue to strengthen our ties with Jewish community leaders to ensure their security and well-being.”
In his concession speech, Cuomo said: "We cherish our diversity and we have no tolerance for discrimination of any kind.
"We will not tolerate any behavior that fans the flames of antisemitism."
Leading Jewish organisations, including the UJA-Fedaration of New York and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), pledged to hold the new mayor “accountable” during his term.
"We expect the mayor of the city with the largest Jewish population in the world to stand unequivocally against antisemitism in all its varied forms and support all of its Jewish residents just as he would all other constituents,” said the ADL.
"In the months ahead, we will hold the Mamdani administration to this basic standard.”
Mamdani promised to "never waver" in the fight against Jew-hate in his own address.
"We will build a city hill that stands steadfast alongside Jewish New Yorkers and does not waver in the fight against the scourge of antisemitism," he told supporters.
He also hit out at anti-Muslim sentiment, adding: "Where the more than one million Muslims know that they belong — not just in the five boroughs of this city, but in the halls of power. No more will New York be a city where you can traffic in Islamophobia and win an election."
