US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday that Washington is moving forward with efforts to designate the Muslim Brotherhood – the Islamist movement that spawned Hamas – as a terrorist organization.
In an interview on Sid and Friends in the Morning, Rubio explained that formally blacklisting a new group is not straightforward, as it requires a detailed review of its various branches to ensure the decision can survive legal scrutiny.
“All of that is in the works, and obviously there are different branches of the Muslim Brotherhood, so you’d have to designate each one of them,” Rubio said when asked about designating the global Islamist network.
The Secretary of State said legal challenges were almost certain.
