President Donald Trump reportedly suggested that Jews have dual loyalties and “are only in it for themselves”, according to the Washington Post.
Mr Trump, who is also alleged to have said Jews “stick together”, made the remark after phone calls with Jewish lawmakers, the newspaper reported.
The lengthy report, which cites anonymous current and former US officials, explores allegations of racism which have long stalked Mr Trump’s presidency.
The alleged comments drew criticism from the Joe Biden campaign, with the Democrat’s Jewish engagement director Aaron Keyak warning against “Trump’s dangerous rhetoric during our sacred time of reflection and holiness.”
“This should serve as a wake up call to the relatively few Jewish Americans who still insist on standing with and promoting the current occupant of the White House,” he said.
A White House spokeswoman denied the Post’s characterisations of Mr Trump in a statement to the newspaper: “Donald Trump’s record as a private citizen and as president has been one of fighting for inclusion and advocating for the equal treatment of all,” said Sarah Matthews. “Anyone who suggests otherwise is only seeking to sow division.”
Meanwhile during a call with American Jewish leaders ahead of Rosh Hashanah last week, Mr Trump reportedly said “we love your country also.”
"We really appreciate you, we love your country also and thank you very much," he said, Jewish Insider reported.
