A Conservative MP has reacted with fury after learning that a Jewdas activist called comments he made at the Reform Judaism annual dinner “homophobic”.
Andrew Percy appeared on stage in conversation with Labour MP Luciana Berger at the event earlier this month and spoke of the welcoming attitude he experienced on converting to Judaism and his admiration for Progressive Judaism’s support for couples “regardless of who they chose to marry – be that inter-faith or same sex”.
But speaking to the Dulwich and West Norwood Labour branch on Thursday, Annie Cohen said she was at the same dinner and accused Mr Percy of making “homophobic” remarks about the need to tolerate “homosexuality as a lifestyle”.
The Jewdas activist told Labour members: "There are people who see gay people as exactly the same as straight people. In fact, I heard a Tory MP say this at the movement for Reform Judaism dinner on Sunday.
“And he said something about being tolerant of other people's life choices - as if being straight was some kind of life choice.
“It just made me really angry... It is, in my view, homophobic.”
Speaking to the JC, Mr Percy said: “So consumed by hate are people like Annie Cohen and her ilk that, even when I referenced progressive Judaism’s inclusivity towards couples of all shapes and sizes - be that same-sex or inter-faith relationships - as the reasons I was drawn to progressive Judaism, she still, because of this hatred in her heart, attempts to smear me and create a division when no division exists.
“It is just disgusting. She is consumed by hatred and bigotry.”
He called on Labour to suspend Ms Cohen, if she is a party member, and launch an investigation.
Mr Percy, the MP for Brigg and Goole, announced he was converting to Judaism in March 2017.
