Two pro-Israel protesters were arrested in bizarre circumstances following Tuesday evening’s demonstrations in Hendon.
The young Jews appeared to clash with a member of the strictly Orthodox anti-Zionist Neturei Karta sect in Brent Street at around 8pm.
One of the pair, an unnamed 19-year-old, allegedly smashed the man’s car window. He was spotted by a passing jogger.
Unfortunately for him, the jogger turned out to be Brian Moore, the Chief Constable of Wiltshire Police who has been seconded to run the UK Border Agency. Mr Moore was off-duty and stopped to detain the man.
In an ensuing melee the second pro-Israel protester – a 17-year-old who cannot be named because of his age – attempted to help his friend, but was also arrested after allegedly assaulting the Chief Constable.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing one of the men “posing for pictures” after being handcuffed by officers.
The pair were later bailed until early July. They both face a charge of affray and the alleged window-smasher faces an additional charge of criminal damage.
