Two Jewish singers from a Nottingham University musical society are to compete for a place in the final of Channel 5 talent show “Don’t Stop Believing”.

Along with 16 others from the campus-formed group “Musicality”, Max Grant, 21, a medical student from Finchley, and James Lewis, 22, an English graduate from Watford, will face the public vote after a live performance this Sunday.

Both are used to the limelight, having starred in a number of Musicality concerts and musical theatre productions.

Although the exact track they will be performing is being kept secret, Max hinted that it is a “popular classic” that everyone can sing along to.

The contest, based on the television series Glee, is presented by former Spice Girl Emma Bunton. Another Jewish family group, Jacobs’ Street, has already been knocked out.

The top prize is a record contract and tour, but Max, who heads to the Nottingham campus Chabad house for Shabbat meals when he’s not busy rehearsing, admitted the competition is tough.

“But the group has come together well,” he said. “I think we have a fairly decent chance.”

And even if Musicality does win, Max said his studies come first. “It wouldn’t change a thing. Medicine is still my top priority.”

In any case, the group aren’t taking the contest too seriously.

“We are young, dynamic, and we all share a love of doing this,” said James.

“But really, we just want to have a good time, not look too silly and put on a good show.”

He added: “Although my parents are classic Jewish parents and are very excited about it.”
