An antisemitic sign bearing the words “smash the Jewish white supremacist Nazis” was discovered in Shoreditch earlier this week.
“Wake up! We are livining [sic] in a psychopathic Zionist military [sic] police state,” read the sign spotted in a window on Columbia Road on Monday and reported to the police on Thursday.
The sign appears to have been taken down and replaced with a print of the cover of Gloria Naylor’s novel 1996, about living under government surveillance.
Graffiti referencing the “Zionist millitary police” and “mindcontrol” was also reported on road signs and a construction hoarding in the area over the last eight months.
Daubings also contained triple parentheses, a symbol known as “the echo” that was initially used by neo-Nazis to indicate that a person or concept is Jewish.
Scotland Yard said no arrests have been made but enquiries remain ongoing.
"Police were contacted on Thursday, 7 October following reports of an offensive sign displayed in the window of an address in Virginia Road E2.
"Officers attended the address but there were was no one present," a spokesperson said.
Author and antisemitism campaigner Ben Freeman condemned the window sign found this week.
Mr Freeman, who was sent a photo of the sign by a member of the public and posted it on his Twitter feed, warned: “This is what we mean [when] we say that Jew-hatred has been re-normalised.
“We all know where this leads, the non-Jewish world must wake up to what is happening.”
