The Jewish neighbourhood watch group Shomrim swooped on a man who had reportedly kicked down the door of a Jewish home in north London on Thursday, holding him until police arrived.
A man in his 40s was arrested in connection with a burglary shortly afterwards.
He remains in custody, the Met Police said, adding the property was vacant during the incident.
Shomrim said it attended Vartry Road on Thursday evening following a report that a man had kicked in the door of a residential property.
Volunteers detained a suspect on the scene and handed him over to the police, according to a spokesman for the neighbourhood watch group.

The Met Police said patrolling officers were flagged down at around 7.30pm to reports “a man had been detained after being seen forcing entry to a property on Vartry Road, N15”.
“Officers attended the location and found that the door to a house had been forced open and an untidy search carried out.
“There was no-one in the property at the time of the incident,” a force spokesperson said.
A spate of burglaries was reported in the local area over recent weeks, according to Shomrim.
