Staff at a Judaica store have been left “shocked” after an anonymous caller rang the shop and said “Hitler had the best ovens”.

Brauns Judaica, in Stamford Hill, north London received the call at around 6pm yesterday.

The antisemitic comment was all that was said before the phone was put down.

A member of staff at the shop told the JC: “It was very, very bad – it was very scary. If they start calling you, what’s going to be next? It’s really shocking.”

The telephone call is the latest in a number of antisemitic incidents which have taken place in Stamford Hill, including swastikas being daubed on walls and roads and members of the area’s Jewish community being subjected to verbal and physical abuse.

Brauns immediately alerted the Stamford Hill Shomrim volunteer security group and the police.

Rabbi Herschel Gluck, president of the Shomrim, described the incident as a “wake up call… if there are still those that question the danger of the rise of the far-right”.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said that “shortly after 18:00hrs on Thursday, 30 November a member of staff at a shop in Dunsmure Road, N16, received a phone call which was antisemitic in nature. An appointment has been made for officers to speak to the victim. No arrests have been made. Enquiries continue.

“Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Tweet @MetCC. Information can also be reported anonymously 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org."
