Senior Sephardi Rabbi Joseph Dweck has added his voice to Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis in calling for unity, as Benjamin Netanyahu forges ahead with the proposed overhaul of Israel’s judiciary.

Rabbi Dweck, Senior Rabbi of the S&P Sephardi Community told the JC: "It is understandable that when the most prominent and powerful Jewish presence on the planet is struggling with internal strife, the hearts of the Jewish people worldwide are stirred.

"The State of Israel is quite possibly the greatest miracle our people have ever seen in modern times, if not in our entire history. We cannot help but be impassioned regarding its internal affairs.

"The political polarities that we have been witnessing becoming ever more pronounced over the last years is reaching high tide. It is precisely during such sensitive and charged times that we must, as one, ensure that the Jewish nation remains responsibly united. There are many forces in the world that would have our people torn asunder, we must not, under any circumstances bring it upon ourselves.

I, along with the S&P Sephardi Community, pray for peace and stability in our homeland. I also hope that we all do our part in holding that peace and stability sound to the degree it is in our hands to do."

Senior Rabbi Dweck has served as the Deputy President of the London School of Jewish Studies, the Ecclesiastical Authority of The Board of Deputies of British Jews, and as a member of the Standing Committee of the Conference of European Rabbis.

Writing for the JC this week, Chief Rabbi Mirvis appealed for “Jewish unity” in response to the growing storm over the highly controversial plans for judicial reform.

Rabbi Mirvis wrote: “Jewish unity is not only a noble aspiration. It is a sacred responsibility — for politicians, leaders, activists and for us all, both in Israel and around the world.”
