The Sunday Times ran a story this week about growing hysteria over Ebola in the United States after the death of a nurse who had flown into the country.
Its online version was illustrated with a photo - said to have been tweeted from a plane – of a man wrapped in a transparent plastic sheet as if demonstrating precautions that people were now trying to take against the disease.
But the wrapped man had nothing to do with Ebola or any other medical condition.
He was simply a Cohen following strict rabbinic orders and trying to protect himself against ritual impurity when flying over a cemetery.
The paper finally realised the mistake on Wednesday. "We thought this picture spoke to the story, but it turned out to be an old image that was circulating," said foreign editor Peter Conradi.
