Protests ahead of Israel's Euro 2016 qualifier with Wales

articlemain

Anti-Israel protesters demonstrated in Cardiff this afternoon ahead of Israel's Euro 2016 qualifier against Wales.

Hundreds of activists marched from City Hall towards Cardiff City Stadium in a rally organised by Fair Play for Palestine.

A counter-demonstration was organised for Israeli fans outside the stadium with hundreds expected to participate in a "pre-match celebration of Israel".

The Zionist Federation (ZF) and grassroots groups North West Friends of Israel and Sussex Friends of Israel organised the event for activists who wanted to support the visiting side.

The ZF's Alan Melkman described claims by opponents that Israel discriminated against Palestinian footballers as downright lies.

On Thursday, Cardiff City Council scrapped a photographic exhibition showing Jewish and Arab co-existence through football in Israel, barely 24 hours after it had opened.

The council said it had received “a complaint” and had taken the planned demonstrations around the Wales-Israel match into consideration when making its decision to withdraw the display at the city's Central Library.

The exhibition, sponsored by the Israeli embassy, was on show at Cardiff City Stadium ahead of this afternoon's game.

A spokesperson for the embassy said:"Those who didn't want the co-existence exhibition at the library, got it instead at Cardiff City Stadium, which is very fitting."
