Pro-Gaza MPs urge Home Secretary to consider ‘all necessary measures, including military action’

Five MPs have called for the UK to support a UN-led military intervention in Gaza to stop Israel's alleged genocide, after a report from the global body accusing the Jewish State of that crime was released.
A group of four independent MPs and one Liberal Democrat have written to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper calling on the government to "urgently pursue UN-led military intervention" to stop the war in Gaza.
Pro-Gaza independents Adnan Hussain, Ayoub Khan, Iqbal Mohamed and Shockat Adam, as well as Liberal Democrat Andrew George, all signed the letter on Tuesday calling for action.
“The UK is a founding signatory of the Genocide Convention and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council," the letter said. “These positions are not ceremonial. They come with binding legal and obligations.”
The Convention, the letter went on, obliged Britain to "prevent and to punish genocide".
The UN Charter "authorises the Security Council to take enforcement measures, including military intervention,” it said.
It claimed that diplomatic avenues – including protest, condemnation and humanitarian appeals - have been "tried and systematically ignored by Israel”, and suggested that military action might be the only option.
“When genocide is occurring, the international community – including the UK – has the legal authority and political duty to act under the framework of the UN Charter.
“The Responsibility to Protect (R2P), adopted by all UN Member States including the UK, provides the international community the authority to intervene, militarily, if necessary, when a State is perpetrating mass atrocities against a civilian population and peaceful means have failed.”
The letter urged the government to table a Security Council resolution "authorising all necessary measures, including military action, to protect civilians in Gaza and halt acts of genocide".
If blocked, the MPs say the UK must lead a “peace initiative” and begin consultations to prepare a “multinational peace enforcement mission”.
The call came after the UN Human Rights Council published a long-awaited report accusing Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians.
The report has been rejected by Jerusalem, with the Foreign Ministry calling it “distorted and false”.
And, as the JC reported, its authors have also come under scrutiny for their alleged bias against Israel, including an incident in which one of them claimed that social media was controlled by the “Jewish lobby”, for which they subsequently apologised.
Posting about the letter on X, lead signatory Hussain said: “In 1994, the world failed to stop genocide in Rwanda. In 1995, we failed in Srebrenica. Today, in Gaza, we are again being tested. We must act now!”
His office did not respond to a request for comment from JC when asked if he supported a UK-backed military invasion of Gaza.
Hussain was previously criticised by Jewish communal groups when he suggested that Israel is planning to create “gas chambers” for Palestinians.
Another signatory, MP for Leicester South, Shockat Adam, last week described the IDF as having “blood-soaked tentacles” during a parliamentary debate on Israel’s strike on Qatar.
Meanwhile MP for Birmingham Perry Barr, Ayoub Khan, previously criticised released British-Israel hostage Emily Damari’s remarks about the government’s move to recognise a Palestinian state and said ordinary Palestinians have been “held hostage for decades”.
Batley and Dewsbury MP Iqbal Mohamed was also criticised for sharing a post comparing Israel’s war against Hamas with the Holocaust.
