The Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) has endorsed Bridget Phillipson as its preferred candidate for deputy leader of the Labour Party.
The North East MP, Education Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities said she was “honoured” to receive the nomination from the Jewish party affiliate.
Ella Rose-Jacobs, chair of JLM, said that Phillipson – who has served in Parliament since 2010 – is committed to supporting efforts to eliminate antisemitism from within the Labour Party.
In an internal JLM vote, Phillipson secured 72 per cent of the members’ support, while Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell received 28 per cent, the movement announced on Friday.
Commenting on the JLM nomination, Bridget Phillipson said: “I’m honoured to receive the support of the Jewish Labour Movement for the deputy leadership.
"Like JLM, I am determined that our party and our Labour government are focused on shaping our future not arguing about the past. I will be a voice for members and our affiliated societies round the Cabinet table – bringing Labour’s heart and soul into government.
“As Deputy Leader I will unite the party, tell Labour’s story, and make sure we bring the change people chose – ensuring we defeat Reform and win again.”
Rose-Jacobs added: “The Jewish Labour Movement has been affiliated to the Labour Party since 1920, and takes our rights and responsibilities seriously.
“After an excellent turnout from our members we are delighted to nominate Bridget Phillipson to be Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.
“We trust her to safeguard the hard work of Keir Starmer in ridding the Labour Party of antisemitism and taking us forwards as Labour continues the vital work of government.”
Phillipson and Powell are set to take part in hustings during the Labour Party conference, which begins this weekend. With ballots opening on 8 October, the results are expected on 25 October.
The contest for Labour’s deputy leadership was triggered by Angela Rayner’s resignation, after she admitted to underpaying stamp duty on a flat in Brighton.
Phillipson is seen as Downing Street’s preferred candidate for the role, as she retained her post in cabinet following the reshuffle. She was backed on Thursday by GMB, one of Britain’s largest trade unions. Meanwhile, the Fire Brigades Union nominated Powell.
