As a Hindu I understand Chanukah and stand with British Jews, says PM at Downing St reception

The Prime Minister emphasised the bonds between Hindus and Jews in a special Chanukah reception at Downing Street this week, where he vowed to eradicate antisemitism.

“As a proud Hindu, I’ve often been struck by the similarity between Chanukah and Diwali, though with latkes instead of laddus (round, sweet pastries made from flour, ghee and sugar), dreidels instead of diva lamps (lights to welcome Lakshmi, the Hindu Goddess of Wealth),” Rishi Sunak said.

Mr Sunak hosted the annual Chanukah reception at his official residence on Wednesday, where he lit the menorah with the Chief Rabbi and welcomed members of the Jewish community.

The Prime Minister lit the first candle and made a speech. The Chief Rabbi recited two blessings and lit the remaining four candles, and guests joined in the Chanukah songs.

In his address, which was enthusiastically received, the PM stressed that he embraced diversity and valued the Jewish community’s rich contribution to British national life.

“I may be the UK’s first Asian Prime Minister, but we had our first Jewish Prime Minister 150 years ago,” he said.

“That is the Britain I love, one which embraces all its people and you can practice your faith free from fear, where we tackle antisemitism in all its forms and where we celebrate the incredible contribution made by members of the Jewish community to our national life.”

The Prime Minister went on to compare the Chanukah celebrations to his Hindu faith and Diwali, and re-emphasised his commitment to tackling antisemitism at the evening reception.

“Of course, I know recent years have been particularly challenging for the UK’s Jewish community,” he said. “We’ve seen a resurgence of antisemitism.

“But we will eradicate that hateful scourge together.”
