Police are investigating after a man raised his arm in an alleged Nazi salute towards Tottenham fans during a Premier League match at the weekend.
Newcastle United said on Monday that Northumbria Police had been made aware of an “alleged racist gesture” made towards Spurs supporters during Sunday’s game at St James’ Park.
The club did not comment publicly on the gesture, but the JC understands the allegations are connected to a photo shared online of a man facing bleachers and extending his arm upward.
The Newcastle Lads and Lasses Against Fascism called for help identifying the individual shown in a dark cap and jacket as it shared the photo on Twitter on Monday.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said enquiries into “an alleged racist incident” during Sunday’s game were ongoing but refused to further clarify further.
The force said it was working to identify anyone involved and ascertain whether criminal offences have been committed.
“As a force, we do not tolerate hate crimes of any kind within our communities and are committed to taking swift and robust action against perpetrators,” the spokesperson said.
In its statement, Newcastle United said “discrimination has absolutely no place in football, in the street, online or in wider society and we will not tolerate it under any circumstances.”
“Newcastle United will pursue the strongest possible action against anyone involved in discriminatory behaviour and will support any efforts by the authorities to secure a criminal conviction,” it added.
“For this alleged incident to take place at a time when all Premier League clubs are visibly supporting the No Room For Racism campaign shows the work we all have ahead of us, to which we remain absolutely committed.”
