Philip Glass, the American minimalist composer, turned 80 today.
The composer, who was born in Baltimore to Jewish immigrants from Lithuania, has won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for his soundtracks to The Truman Show (1998) and The Hours (2002) respectively.
On Saturday, the BBC held a “Total Immersion Day” in his honour, with two concerts held at the Guildhall’s Milton Court venue, as well as an evening concert at the Barbican Centre.
The BBC Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Singers and Guildhall music students all performed work’s from the composer’s oeuvre, with the Barbican concert also featuring the UK premiere of Glass’s Double Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra.
