The Guardian's reader's editor has explained the reasons behind the volume of its coverage on Israel and the Palestinians following a series of complaints.

Chris Elliott said he had received 17 complaints this year relating to allegations of antisemitism and a disproportionate amount of coverage on Gaza.

Writing in Monday's paper, he said the high number of images from Gaza, was a result of a "tough reality" in the availability of pictures from conflict zones and that "gaining access to Syria, Islamic State and Ukraine is far more difficult" .

Bu he accepted that the Guardian must put some effort "into the use and awareness of language that we use to discuss the issues on both sides".
