Tesco has moved to reassure customers that kosher products have not been removed from its online sales and delivery service.

Online shoppers in a number of locations across Britain reported being unable to buy kosher food using the Tesco.com grocery service last week.

It sparked fears the range had been removed from the company’s website.

A Tesco spokeswoman said a “technical error” had been experienced and the problem was due to be resolved this week, making kosher items available as usual.

Customer Lionel Shrago had attempted to buy bottles of kiddush wine on behalf of Harrogate Hebrew Congregation, but could access no kosher products on the website.

He said: “Last Pesach we checked out what Tesco had online and got half a dozen pages of items at least. As well as the kiddush wine I checked individually for products like Gilbert’s meats and Mrs Elswood and got nothing.

“Although we do not have a Tesco store in Harrogate, they do deliver. I still suspect something’s amiss.

“To get the wine we will have to drive into Leeds. It’s such a nuisance.”

The company’s spokeswoman said the range of products available online can differ depending on availability at a customer’s nearest Tesco supermarket.

Jews living in an area without a large community, and where Tesco do not stock kosher groceries in store, may also be unable to purchase the items online.

Tesco is not included in the “buycott” campaign starting tomorrow which encourages Jewish shoppers to buy as many Israeli products as possible in response to the Palestine Solidarity Campaign’s week-long boycott of goods.
