Mayim Blalik's hit Nineties show Blossom is being rebooted, with the original cast, creators and producers set to return.

The show, which is currently in development, is being positioned as a drama, in a shift from its original sitcom format.

Starring Jewish actor Bialik as the eponymous Blossom, the show ran for five series in the mid-Nineties. It was broadcast in the US on NBC from 1991 to 1995, and in the UK on Channel 4.

Created by Don Reo, the sitcom centred around teenager Blossom and her family, the Russos.

Bialik, who as a child starred in the classic Bette Midler film Beaches, went on to appear in The Big Bang Theory and to host the US quiz show Celebrity Jeopardy!

While Blossom's producers have yet to make an official announcement, Bialik confirmed in an interview with Vanity Fair that the pilot script had been written and that the previous actors, as well as creators and producers, were on board.

“I’m happy to tell you that, yes, it’s true. … We’re hoping to reboot it not as a sitcom, though,” Bialik said.

“We want to bring back these interesting, deep characters—a child of divorce, a recovering drug addict, an alcoholic—to see them in a whole new way.”
