Police have arrested a man in connection with a racially motivated attack in a Jewish area of London.
Tyres on over 40 cars parked in streets in Stamford Hill were slashed in the early hours of Monday morning.
A police spokesman said: “We arrested a 21 year old male and he is being held in north London in connection with a series of attack on cars in the area and it is being treated as a racially motivated crime.
He said police believed that the Jewish community had been the target of the attacks.
According to a spokesman for Shomrim, the volunteer community security group, the damaged cars were makes known to be favoured by local Jews.
He said: “Tens of vehicles were targeted, with the trend being Volvos and people-carriers of various makes, which are very popular vehicles amongst the Jewish community.”
Moishe Friedlander, who liaises between the Jews and police in the area, said: “I have no doubt it was a hate crime.
“The cars that were targeted are particularly popular with the Jewish community here.
“The police have increased patrols and I have full faith that they will get results, as they have shown already by making arrests.”
