OUTBREAK
A primary in North London has become the first Jewish school to close over coronavirus fears.
The North West London Jewish Day School in Willesden announced in an email to parents on Thursday night that the primary would not reopen on Friday as a “precaution” after students attended an event where a man infected with the virus was present.
The email clarified that “there are still no confirmed cases within the school community”, but that medical advice was being sought as to the next steps.
The students were present at a Purim party hosted at St John’s Wood Synagogue on March 9.
“This is the best course of action at this time for everyone’s wellbeing,” parents were informed.
The email, which promised further communications would follow, was signed by headteacher Judith Caplan, chair of governors Ashley Donoff and chair of trustees David Landy.
NWLJDS has 258 pupils between the ages of three and 11.
The move followed a statement by St John’s Wood Synagogue that “one of our team has now confirmed to have the coronavirus and was in attendance at the Purim party”.
The synagogue has since clarified that associate minister Rabbi Yoni Golker had tested positive and was in quarantine.
