The climax to the latest series of Ripper Street, BBC1's Victorian detective drama, had a scene in a (fictional) East End kosher restaurant. The chicken soup must have been good because the visiting American journalist swigged the last drops from the bowl rather than waste any. But such bad table manners – it's no surprise he came to a sticky end.
