Labour's problem is “not only Corbyn but also Corbynism and Corbynites,” Jewish Leadership Council chairman Jonathan Goldstein has said  as he set out how party can repair its relationship with the community.

Writing in the Sunday Times in the wake of Labour's disastrous election under Jeremy Corbyn, Mr Goldstein said that “large numbers of the influx of far-left members” into the party under his leadership were “carriers of a particular variant of antisemitism deep in their ideological and political approach”.

“We were also let down by many of those who now denounce what took place but were at the heart of the project or on the national executive committee,” he continued.

“The most painful realisation of this campaign was to discover that, to our friends in Labour, British Jews were ultimately politically expendable.”

He added: “There are Jews who are very nervous about being accused of having helped to defeat Corbyn and his far-left takeover of the Labour Party. I am not one of them.

“History has taught us that if Jews are weak, we suffer. Sooner or later others will also suffer, because anti-Jewish racism is about the state of society.

“The far left has always decried establishments for not speaking out. We did. You couldn’t take it.

“I welcome that this Labour Party paid a price for its pact with racism, but Labour’s election defeat, its origins and its consequences are not the fault of British Jews, as I am sure that any real evaluation will show.”

In the article, Mr Goldstein offered five ways for the next Labour leader to win back the trust of the Jewish community, including “tearing up” the report by Baroness Chakrabarti into Labour antisemitism and “apologise for the whitewash it was”, “implementing an independent disciplinary process”, and “ensuring that any serious offence equals immediate expulsion.”

He added the party would have to “take on” the Unite union, which, he said, “has been part of the problem and is unlikely to be part of the solution” under its leader Len McCluskey.
