Kept waiting on the bench

articlemain

Sir Gavin Lightman has had to wait a while for the portrait he is entitled to hang at Lincoln's Inn in London for serving as its treasurer in 2008.

The artist he commissioned it from felt extra pressure to get it right - Sir Gavin's daughter, Sarah. It took eight years to complete, during which time she got married, edited a book and had a baby.

The pose of her father was partly inspired by Holbein's depiction of Thomas Cromwell and in the background hangs a portrait of her grandfather, Harold Lightman, also a Lincoln's Inn bencher.

But Sir Gavin, a former Chancery judge, will now have to wait until the completion of work at the Inn until the drawing is finally displayed.
