Jessie Ware targeted by Twitter antisemitism

articlemain

Singer-songwriter Jessie Ware has received antisemitic abuse on Twitter. The offensive message was sent to the 26-year-old in the early hours of Saturday morning after she performed live on Channel 4.

Ms Ware had sent a tweet to her 28,000 followers on the social networking site praising DJ A-Trak— real name Alain Macklovitch — who is also Jewish and also performed on the show.

A tweeter identifying himself as “John Sin” and using the Twitter handle @fortherub replied:
“Cor a conk like that bet your [sic] deluded like those other ***** at the JC.”

The JC reported last week how Ms Ware, a former intern at the newspaper, had received critical acclaim for her debut album, Devotion. It entered the charts in fifth place on Sunday.

Other Twitter users came to the singer’s defence, telling Sin that he was “revolting” and would be “reported for racism”.

I won't sit back and take this sort of abuse

Following the abuse, Ms Ware tweeted: “Pretty shocked by my first encounter with an antisemitic twitter troll last night. I won’t stand for it.”

She later told the JC: “It’s the first time I’ve encountered direct antisemitism. It’s upsetting and moronic, but I will never sit back and take it.”

She reported the abuse to Twitter, but the abuser’s account – and the offensive tweet — was still visible days later.
