Janet Bloch has created an exhibition of photographs to promote a positive understanding of disability, in memory of her son Steven, who died earlier this year.
A keen photographer, Steven was left disabled after a skiing accident when he was 19 years old. He received a severe head injury, was in a coma for nearly a month, and suffered what he later called subtle brain damage. He died earlier this year.
Following the accident, Steven was inspired to pursue a career in photography to show what people with disabilities can do, as opposed to what they cannot do. "Through his photographs, Steven tried to promote a positive image of disability," Ms Bloch, 72, tells People. "He had to struggle with certain things himself, so he became in tune with people who also had struggles. He had planned to do an exhibition. I am simply doing it for him."
The exhibition, Art of Disability: Pushing the Boundaries, is running at the London Jewish Cultural Centre, Golders Green, North-West London, until October 17.
I think he would be very happy about the exhibition. He felt very strongly that people don't want sympathy or to be put on a pedestal, but to be treated in a normal way for what they can do."
