Ivan Lewis fails in bid to become Labour’s Manchester mayor candidate

Ivan Lewis, the Jewish MP for Bury South, has been unsuccessful in his attempt to clinch the Labour party nomination for the upcoming Greater Manchester Mayoral election.

Mr Lewis came third in the contest, with 19.8 per cent of the vote, behind Andy Burnham, the Shadow Home Secretary, who won the primary with 51 per cent, and the current mayor of Manchester Tony Lloyd on 29.2 per cent.

Mr Burnham said: “I thank our members for the faith they have shown in me. I will repay it by devoting all my energy to uniting the Labour family here, working to win back the voters we have lost and building a policy programme with broad appeal.”

In an interview with the JC two weeks ago, Mr Lewis made it clear that despite the recent Labour antisemitism crisis, many of Manchester’s Jews – including himself – were determined to stick with the party.

“We've just seen the formation of the Jewish Labour Movement in Manchester. We had an inaugural meeting recently and the room was packed”, he said.

"I'm going nowhere - it's as much my party as it is anybody else's."
