How the author won a pig

articlemain

Congratulations to Gary Shteyngart, the first American winner of the annual Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction.

Lenny Abramov, the fictional anti-hero of his dystopian satire of America, Super Sad True Love Story, is not a name you'd expect to find within the world of Jeeves and Wooster. But the judges were bowled over by the "wild comedy" of the Russian-Jewish writer's third novel.

Apart from a set of Wodehouse and some fine champagne, his prize also includes the Wodehousian gift of a Gloucestershire pig Old Spot pig, which will be ceremonially named after the winning book.

A previous recipient of the award was Howard Jacobson for The Mighty Waltzer - a rather more fitting name for a prize porker, don't you think.
