Guilty verdict in Stamford Hill antisemitism trial

articlemain

A North London man arrested last year after shouting antisemitic abuse in the Stamford Hill area has been found guilty of racially/religiously aggravated intentional harassment.

Stuart Birnie, 36, from Hackney, was convicted on September 29 at Wood Green Crown Court; he had originally denied the charge.

Birnie was taken into custody on December 17 after verbally abusing a Jewish pedestrian.

According to the victim, Birnie had shouted "F*** all the Jewish people, go f*** yourself, I'm going to kill all the Jews".

Shomrim, the Jewish volunteer security group, played an active role in the apprehension of Birnie.

“The victim in this case was minding his own business when he faced vile antisemitic abuse in Stamford Hill”, said a spokesperson for the Stamford Hill Shomrim.

“Shomrim followed the perpetrator until police arrived and arrested him.

“Shomrim supported the victim throughout the lengthy justice procedure, and welcome the guilty verdict. This was disgraceful abuse which should not be tolerated.”

Sentencing is due to take place on October 28.
