Golders Green records highest Covid infection rate in Barnet

Rate of infection two and a half times that of the borough for week ending September 26

Golders Green ward had the highest Covid-19 infection rate in Barnet, according to the latest statistics published by the council.

Its rate of 71.4 cases per 100,000 people was two and a half times more than the borough average of 28.6 per 100,000 for the week ending September 26.

Golders Green had the largest Jewish population in any ward in the country according to the 2011 Census - although there is nothing to link the high number of positive tests specifically to the Jewish community.

Council officials are due to study the latest batch of statistics before deciding whether any action needs to be taken to increase local awareness.

Since the outbreak in late February, Golders Green ward has recorded the highest number of confirmed cases in the borough with 899, followed by Childs Hill with 698 and Garden Subur with 679.

It is widely believed that the Jewish community was particularly hit in the early days of pandemic through mixing at Purim before the prevalence of the disease was generally understood.
