A resolution calling on all transport companies to stop the movement of services to Israeli settlements has been passed with the backing of the British transport union.

The resolution, voted for by delegates at the annual International Transport Federation (ITF) conference, calls for action on “illegal Israeli settlements” and was passed last Thursday.

Bob Crow, general secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers and patron of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign seconded the motion proposed by the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) at the Mexico event.

The RMT had originally called for a series of more severe proposals, including a boycott against Israel, an end to arms sales to Israel and a ban on all trade in goods and agricultural products, none of which were passed.

The resolution calls for recognition that “economic relations with the settlements help to sustain their existence, in violation of international law” and calls on ITF to take action “against multinational transportation companies providing transportation to these settlements.”

The ITF is the umbrella organisation for more than 750 transport unions in 155 countries around the world.
