Fury over reported Corbyn nomination of top aide Karie Murphy for peerage

Jewish Labour Movement says nomination of Karie Murphy should be 'rescinded immediately'

The Jewish Labour Movement has reacted with fury over Jeremy Corbyn’s reported nomination of his chief of staff Karie Murphy for a peerage.

The Sunday Times has reported that hers was one of eight names on a leaked list of people the outgoing Labour leader has put forward for the honour.

In a statement, JLM said her nomination was “deeply inappropriate and must be rescinded immediately” as the Equality and Human Rights Commission was still investigating Labour’s handling of antisemitism.

Among complaints made against the party was that staff in the leader’s office interfered with disciplinary inquiries.

JLM said its lawyers had written to the Lords Appointment Commission last month after reports that Mr Corbyn was considering recommendations for peers.

Among others, it had voiced concern about Ms Murphy at the time.

In its latest statement, it said that Mr Corbyn was “using his final weeks of office to reward failure”.

According to the ST, other nominations include the former speaker John Bercow and the former deputy Labour leader, Tom Watson, who was an outspoken critic of the party’s handling of antisemitism allegations.
