Visitors to Tel Aviv now have extra help choosing where to eat thanks to two young foodies from London.
Natalie Kanfer, 21, and Leah Berwald, 22, have set up the Tel Aveat website which reviews and recommends eateries in the city.
Ms Berwald said: “I realised there was a gap in the market for a website or blog in English about food in Tel Aviv.”
The site, which began life as an Instagram account and is aimed at tourists and the international Tel Aviv community, so far gets around 200 views a day.
The two friends visit the restaurants and write up reviews of the food, service, atmosphere and decor. Restaurants they find not up to scratch do not make it on to the site.
Former North London Collegiate pupil Ms Kanfer said: “The Tel Aviv restaurant scene is huge. Every week, there is a new restaurant opening, or closing, or a chef changing. There is really a huge food culture. Everyone is always eating out — it’s like New York in that sense.”
The pair, who knew each other in London, both made aliyah after leaving school. They became friends while studying together at IDC Herzliya college in Tel Aviv.
While the website does not currently make any money, they are hoping to turn it into a profitable business by setting up their own Taste card with promotional offers from restaurants, as well as running food events. They have already run a cheese-and-wine festival attended by 250 people.
