Sam Lee is still fighting the sense that "surely this is all wrong, surely someone's made a terrible mistake".

But there is no doubt. The 35-year-old musician is definitely up for Folk Singer of the Year in next week's prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

"It was the discovery of American Jewish song collectors like Howard Glasser and Ken Goldstein, who recorded Gypsy communities and working people singing, which inspired me to be a song collector myself," he said.

The Belsize Square Synagogue member will perform during the awards ceremony at the Albert Hall. But one number from his repertoire I think it unlikely he will choose to sing there is the gory tale of The Jew's Garden.
