First birthday for Amy Winehouse foundation

Winehouse family, as the troubled singer would have marked her 29th birthday.

Instead, it marks a year since the creation of a foundation in Amy Winehouse's memory, which in the 12 months since its launch has raised funds to help disadvantaged youths.

More than £230,000 has been raised so far to help the New Horizon Youth Centre, which works with young homeless people and provides them with a daily hot meal.

Other projects backed by the foundation include groups advising adolescents on issues relating to drug and alcohol abuse, a children's hospice and a mental health charity , There is also a scholarship fund to send talented youngsters to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, where the singer herself trained.

The aim is to raise £500,000 by the end of this year. Her father Mitch, writing on Twitter, said: "Happy birthday Amy darling. We all love you so much. Dad."
