Limmud holds special memories for Ben Leon, till recently a Mitzvah Day trustee, and his wife Charlotte.

The London-based couple met at its winter conference 15 years ago.

This year they returned with children Raphael, 10, and Ariella, seven.

“It was so amazing for them to have their first machaneh [camp] experience,” Mrs Leon said, “and to make friends from outside shul or school. They have been creating a new social life for themselves.”

Mr Leon added: “They’ve already asked us to come back.”

There were close to 350 children among the record 2,600 participants at this year’s conference - which ended yesterday - with a nursery, programmes for different age groups and a baby-sitting service.

Some sessions enabled parents to take part with their children including “Mishnah for kids” and “Horrible Histories – Infamous Israelites”.

Families could also engage in study and discussion of Jewish texts together in special chavruta slots.

At around £1,200 cost for a family of four, Limmud did not come cheap.

But for many parents, the experience was certainly worth it. One mother of three said she and her husband had been able to see films and concerts while the children were looked after. “It’s a holiday for us,” she said.
