Senior vice-president of the Board of Deputies Laura Marks has sprung a fresh surprise and reversed her decision not to stand for the presidency of the Board next month.

The Mitzvah Day founder, who joined the Board three years ago, announced in February that she would not be not be competing for the top job but would seek a second term as a vice-president.

But she will now bid to become only the second female president in the Board’s 250-year-history.

“I was inundated with people asking me to stand,” she explained today, “and I realised that while I had a heavy commitment and workload, the big job that needs doing in the community is to lead the Board of Deputies.
