“He showed that you could be both a proud citizen of Britain and a proud Jew. He was a mensch, loved by all who knew him. We give thanks for his service. We will miss him.”
Sir Martin who described Israel as “the country I have lived in, taught in, played in, seen my children grow up in and hold in the highest esteem” was buried there on the day of Tu Bishvat.
Israel’s ambassador to Britain, Daniel Taub also wrote a tribute which was read at the funeral.
He said: “Today, as Sir Martin is lowered into the earth of the land he loved, is Tu Bishvat, the day when youngsters throughout Israel are planting trees.
“Like them, planted in this fertile ground, Sir Martin will continue to bring forth fruit as future generations continue to be educated and inspired by his extraordinary legacy.”
