Father and daughter David and Joelle Abrahams are on their way to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The duo, who live in Northwood, Middlesex, left today for the six-day trek, in memory of Mr Abrahams’s close friend Steven Jacobs, who died suddenly from a heart condition in March. The pair are hoping to raise £7,000 for Harefield Hospital.

Optometrist Mr Abrahams, 51, tells People: “I have done a few climbs before. I am not one for asking people for sponsorship but this is something so close to my heart.” In 2006, he climbed Mont Blanc together with Joelle. She says: “I have just come back from a ski season and love the mountains. We are both quite active. I am a bit worried about the altitude as although we have been doing a bit of training in the gym, you can never really prepare for that. I am really looking forward to doing it, and especially for charity.”
Joelle graduated from Oxford University last year and is due to start a job at accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers in September.
