Rabbinic student Rabbi Danny Burkeman has created a novel reference guide for those leading synagogue services.
Mr Burkeman, 29, has come up with a handbook to accompany the new British Reform siddur. The publication, entitled Leading a Community in Prayer, explains different parts of the synagogue service and provides guidance for lay readers on the Torah passages.
"Education is an important component of what Reform Judaism is about," Mr Burkeman, a member of Kol Chai synagogue in Hatch End, Middlesex, tells People. "The new Siddur grapples with the issues of the 21st century, and includes important modern features such as gender-neutral language and transliteration."
He has been holding a series of study sessions on the guide and says there have been a variety of attendees, ranging from Sunday-school madrichim to rabbis.
Originally from Willesden, North London, Mr Burkeman divides his time between the UK and Los Angeles, where he is training at the Hebrew Union College. "I have been especially struck by the use of music in Reform and Conservative services in Los Angeles. I would like to see how we in Britain can develop our own innovative and engaging Jewish music."
He has one year left of his rabbinic program and has recently completed a Masters in Jewish-Christian Relations.
