More than 150 people have applied to volunteer at with the Community Security Trust (CST) since the attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester yesterday morning, the security organisation has told the JC.
Applications have flooded in over the past day as the Jewish community pulled together following the attack, which has left two Jewish men dead.
Police have named the victims killed as 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz and 53-year-old Adrian Daulby.
No existing volunteers have left their roles, despite the fact that a CST member was among three people to be seriously injured yesterday.
Donations have also been pouring in to the organisation since the attack.
A spokesperson for CST said: “We are extremely grateful to the members of the community who have stepped up to apply to become CST volunteers. This shows a powerful reflection of the community’s resilience and strength.
"We are also incredibly thankful for the generous donations many of which come from people who aren't Jewish, but wanted to show their sympathy and support.”
CST also confirmed that one of its own personnel was being treated for serious injuries in hospital.
The group’s chief executive Mark Gardner, said: “One of our CST personnel was seriously injured in yesterday's terror attack at Heaton Park Synagogue.
“We pray for his continuing recovery and salute the courage of all those who helped stop the terrorist from getting into the shul.
“We will keep doing all we can in the protection of our community and thank all of those who support us in doing so.”
The organisation continues to urge members of the Jewish community to take extra precautions in the wake of the attack, including keeping synagogue doors closed and avoiding congregating in groups outside. It has also called for increased police presence outside synagogues and in Jewish areas.
Shulgoers are being encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity without to delay to security onsite, CST or the police.
