Anxiety, responsibility and power were the words used by journalist Jonathan Freedland to summarise the current state of British Jewry, when he addressed more than 100 guests at the Jewish Council for Racial Equality dinner.
The anxiety related to security following the attacks in Paris and Copenhagen. He went on to say that although a small community in Britain, "when we speak about racism, people listen". With that power came "a Jewish responsibility to speak out against all forms of racism".
Jcore executive director Dr Edie Friedman, who set up the charity 39 years ago, spoke about the changing demands on its services.
The £50,000 raised from the central London event will go towards new and existing projects, such as befriending young asylum seekers and the refugee doctors' mentoring scheme, helping them to requalify in the UK.
